Golden Gate Park Edges Analysis
Golden Gate Park (GGP) is San Francisco’s most iconic public park and has been beloved by its residents since its opening in 1937. Over the years, the park has been frequented by locals and visitors from all over the world to experience
this forest getaway, providing a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of urban life. .
In the past few years, planning and city efforts for the neighborhoods surrounding Golden Gate park identified the major need for improvements to park edges and accessibility of the park. Some of the top neighborhood concerns that emerged are pedestrian and bike safety, unsafe and wide crossings along perimeter streets, clarity of entrances, connections to landmarks, accessibility, wayfinding, and visibility.
The Golden Gate Park Edge Improvement Strategy aspires to develop a unified vision to improve access and safety to Golden Gate Park for pedestrians and bicyclists. It also aims to create an action plan that includes a range of short to long-term strategies.
This Existing Conditions Report (ECR) is the first step in a longterm aspiration to improve the edges of Golden Gate Park. The goal of the ECR is to create a database and baseline for future decision-making and strategies to improve the edges of the park.
This report summarizes the work completed as of March 2018 and serves as a starting point for any team that decides to revitalize this effort in the future.
